Si Chava Transken of Prince George is a poet, activist, vegan and UNBC teacher of Social Work. My main interests are in social justice activism - these interests are furthered through teaching, research, scholarly writing, facilitating workshops, speaking or reading poetry at social justice events and/or through fundraising and participating in vibrant expressions of democracy.
Her doctorate is in Equity Studies from the University of Toronto. She was taught by Laurentian University students for three years before coming to Prince George in 2001 to teach in the Social Work and Gender Studies Program. Her private practice, Trans/Formative Services, brings women into her life who are courageous, tenacious, and clawing their way through the pain of patriarchy, classism, heterosexism, and many other ugly oppressions.
Her broad research interests include topics regarding criminal harassment, incest and sexual assault, violence against women, expressive art therapy, feminist social work, anti-racism and mediation, and sexual expressions and identities.
Si has been involved in Jezebel’s Jam (an annual fundraiser organized through the Northern Women’s Centre) every year as an organizer and a performer, and has supported numerous other outreach organizations around the community, including AWAC, STOP, the Sexual Assault Centre and the Beach House.
She has contributed to Open Letter (Special Issue on Artistic Inquiry) ed. Frank Davey, 2007 and published in Capilano Review (2, 42), Treeline (e-journal 2006) and Canadian Women's Studies (14, 4) .
